Oral butyrate salts (sodium, calcium, magnesium butyrate) and tributyrin (a butyrate prodrug) aim to deliver butyrate to the colon or systemic circulation without relying on microbial fermentation. Marketing often pairs them with reports showing low butyrate producers or low pathway scores for butyrogenesis.

Human evidence for routine gut health use is limited: small trials exist in IBD, metabolic, and functional contexts, but effect sizes are inconsistent and delivery to the distal colon from oral capsules is debated. Dietary fiber fermentation remains the primary evidence-aligned route to colonic butyrate.
