The Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes (F:B) ratio is the relative abundance of two dominant bacterial phyla in a stool sample, usually expressed as Firmicutes divided by Bacteroidetes after 16S or shotgun taxonomic assignment. Consumer reports still follow a higher ratio with obesity risk or poor gut balance language inherited from early 2000s literature. Finucane and colleagues showed that collapsing a complex community to two phyla loses most of the biological signal and that phylum ratios correlate weakly, if at all, with BMI when analysed across large datasets (Finucane et al., 2008).

Why reports still show F:B ratio
Phylum-level summaries are easy to compute and easy to explain. Early mouse work reported that ob/ob mice had a higher proportion of Firmicutes relative to Bacteroidetes, and some human cross-sections appeared to mirror that pattern. Vendors adopted the ratio because it fit a simple narrative: two big phyla, one number, a directional health story.
The appeal is format, not validation. Stool metagenomics resolves hundreds of genera and thousands of species-level features; most clinically relevant variation sits below phylum level. A high F:B ratio can coexist with abundant beneficial Faecalibacterium or with a Proteobacteria bloom that the ratio never mentions. Conversely, a “favourable” ratio tells you nothing about diversity, inflammation, or symptoms.
What changed in the literature
Finucane et al. re-analysed human microbiome data and argued that F:B ratio is a poor summary statistic for comparing individuals or linking composition to obesity. Key points from that work and subsequent cohorts:

Meta-analyses and multi-cohort studies (see reading list) generally support treating F:B as hypothesis-generating at best, not a clinical endpoint. Obesity-associated microbiome signatures, where they exist, involve specific genera, gene content, and metabolic pathways, not a single phylum quotient.
Method limits matter in the same breath as the claim: 16S variable region, reference database, and normalization all change phylum calls. The same stool analysed on two platforms can yield different F:B values without any biological change (Lozupone et al., 2013 meta-analysis).
High vs low on consumer reports

Healthy adults in population studies occupy a wide F:B range. Diet shifts the ratio within weeks in some trials (e.g. high-animal-protein vs plant-rich patterns), which is further evidence that a single snapshot is context-dependent, not destiny.
